While teaching children about safety around strangers is important, research shows that the greatest risk comes from people they know and trust—not strangers. In fact, only about 10% of child sexual abuse cases involve strangers. Most perpetrators are friends, family members, or individuals who deliberately position themselves in roles of trust and authority. These individuals often blend seamlessly into communities, appearing friendly and reliable. They seek out environments where they can easily access children—such as sports leagues, faith-based organizations, clubs, and schools—making awareness and prevention essential in all settings.
Predators use a process called grooming to manipulate and desensitize children, gradually breaking boundaries to gain their trust. Through subtle testing and violations, they prepare their victims to accept abuse, often making it difficult for children to recognize or resist. Understanding these tactics is key to protecting children and empowering them with the knowledge to stay safe.
