Who is at risk?

The First Step To Prevent Sexual Abuse in Childhood is Learning the Facts

Most sexual abuse of children occurs in a residence, typically that of the victim or perpetrator – 84% for children under age 12 to 17. There is also a peak in assaults in the late evening hours. Why? Because that is when children are being cared for by someone other than their parents if their parents are working. That is the time frame for after-school care, whether it be with a relative, childcare provider, or after-school activity such as sports, tutoring, etc.

70% of child sexual offenders have between 1 and 9 victims, while 20% have 10 to 40 victims.
The younger the victim, the more likely it is that the abuser is a family member. Of those molesting a child under six, 50% were family members. Family members also accounted for 23% of those abusing children ages 12 to 17.
According to Department of Justice statistics, Black girls and women 12 years and older experienced higher rates of rape and sexual assault than white, Asian, and Latina girls and women from 2005-2010. (U.S. DOJ Bureau of Justice Statistics, “Female Victims of Sexual Violence, 1994-2010,” 2013.)
1 in 10 children will be sexually abused before age 18.
90% of all sexually abused victims know their abuser.
1 in 7 girls and 1 in 25 boys will be sexually abused before they turn 18.
Child sexual abuse occurs at every socioeconomic level, across ethnic and cultural lines, within all religions and all educational levels.
Every 8 minutes, government authorities respond to another report of child sexual abuse.
Every 98 seconds, another person experiences sexual assault.
60% of child sexual abuse victims never tell anyone.
