Knowing What To Look For – The Signs Are Often Present

Emotional Signs

The more common signs are emotional and behavior and they include:

  • Change in mood – Anger, withdrawal, closed off
  • Anxiety or depression
  • Rebellion and/or Runaway attempts
  • Change in eating behavior
  • Attitude change towards school and/or academics
  • Lack of interest in extra-curricular activities
  • Lack of interest in friends
  • Unexplained health concerns like headaches or stomach aches
  • Reluctant to be alone with certain people

Physical Signs

Visible physical signs of sexual abuse are not common. However, the common physical signs may include:

  • Vaginal or anal bleeding, bruises, redness, bumps
  • Scabs around the mouth, genital, vagina, or anus
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Sexually transmitted diseases
  • Abnormal discharge

Other Signs:

  • Bedwetting or soiling accidents unrelated to potty training
  • Chronic stomach and head aches
  • Child exhibits pain when sitting, bike riding or using the restroom
  • Uncomfortable reoccurring pain during urination and/or bowel movements
  • Perpetrator suddenly wants to spend a lot of time with the child alone, away from family for long periods of time
